For 25 years, this famous Avenue has been known as the “pulse of Calgary,” with over 435 businesses, some being locally owned and operated, that are dedicated to serving both tourists and the inner community. 

Shop ‘til you drop at various fashionable boutiques, or indulge in a day of self pampering at one of 17th Avenue’s renowned spas and beauty salons. Families can check out several entertainment venues, cafés and eateries strung along these fun-filled streets, as well as fine dining restaurants which offer distinctive cuisine. While you’re taking a stroll along the tree-lined pedestrian walk ways, keep an eye out for old historical buildings that are sure to impress. Relax in Tomkins Park where there’s always something entertaining going on! Get a chance to listen to some of the local musical talent, or support artists within the community at art in the park. When it comes to leisure and fun, Uptown 17th Avenue has it all! 

Uptown 17th Avenue Popular Events and Attractions

Enjoy music in the gazebo at Tomkins Park every Saturday, weather permitting. 

Annual Chalkwalk and Art Show on the Avenue

Every year between the end of July and mid September, 17th Avenue displays creative chalk art on its sidewalks drawn by students of ACAD, along with art and unique displays which are showcased in Tomkins Park. 

Greenfest

Every Sunday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm, between the months of May and July, Tomkins Park supports “going green.” Purchase goods from local farmers and producers while enjoying tunes from Calgary Bands.

Uptown 17th Avenue Parking

Many businesses will offer free parking. Convenient parking metres are also located along 16th Avenue from 8th to 11th Street SW, which cost 1.25/hour and are available for a maximum of two hours between 9:00am and 6:00pm Monday through Saturday. Weekend parking is also available at the Western Canada High School. Note* peek hour parking restrictions are in place from 7:00am to 8:30am and 3:00pm to 6:00pm.

Originally called Rue Du Notre Dame, Uptown 17th Avenue was voted as one of the top 10 retail streets in Canada and was once the longest Canadian Avenue! For nine years in a row, Uptown 17th Avenue has been Calgary’s best shopping area and has over 200 businesses which are locally owned and operated. Tomkins Park contains some trees that are up to 90 years old, and is named after Elinor Tomkins. The Devenish Building is named after Calgary’s first sheriff.
