Hotel
Description
Named after Captain John Palliser (a Waterford, Ireland explorer who was with the Hector Expedition in the 1850's) and designed by architect Lawrence Gotch, the Palliser was built for a mere 1.5 million dollars. Opened in 1914, the exterior of the Palliser features "Edwardian Commercial" architecture. Its unique E-shape ensures that all guestrooms have outside views and creates the appearance of three towers. Inside the hotel, a wide variety of decors flow together to create a luxurious and unique property - from the Tudor-style Rimrock room, the Louis XIV Crystal Ballroom, the Renaissance Revival lobby to the Art-Deco Penthouse, the Palliser is a sumptuous visual feast. Boasting views of the city, this stately sandstone structure has consistently maintained its ranking as Calgary's most elegant hotel. Ongoing renovation efforts have served only to restore this heritage hotel to its original grandeur.
