About Lord Beaverbrook
Lord Beaverbrook is the largest high school in Calgary, with approximately 2100 students and 160 staff members. Our school motto is “Everything to the Best of One's Ability,” and at Lord Beaverbrook there is a place for everyone to learn. Our extensive facilities and the size of the school provide our students with many advantages in course selection and access to innovative programs. Our staff members and students “go out of their way” to maintain a friendly, personal atmosphere with a strong focus on teaching, learning and leadership. We have a full complement of courses in core academic subjects, in fine arts and performing arts, in international languages, and in CTS (Career and Technology Studies). We offer an Advanced Placement program for academically talented students, extensive programs for students with special learning needs, and flexible course structures for students with diverse learning styles. Also, we are organized into five Academies: Business, Industry and Entrepreneurship, Communication Studies, Fine and Performing Arts, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Through the academies and their associated Career Pathways, we are providing many opportunities for our students to explore career and life planning and to connect their course work at Lord Beaverbrook with a variety of community-based experiences related to post-secondary education and the world of work. Lord Beaverbrook has established a tradition of excellence in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular programming.
Lord Beaverbrook High School was founded in 1967, and the first year of attendance was in 1968. We inherited our name from a man named William Maxwell Aitken. He was born on May 25, 1879, in Maple, Ontario. In 1916, he was recognized for his achievements with a seat in the House of Lords, the senior branch of the British Parliament. It was customary to create a title for oneself, so Aitken thought back to his childhood and the times he would spend fishing at a stream called the Beaverbrook. This is when he claimed the title, Lord Beaverbrook. Lord Beaverbrook died at the age of eighty-five, on June 9, 1964.
