The History of Elbow River Casino
Sam Switzer plays an integral part in the story of Elbow River Casino. A key figure in the vision, planning and ongoing operation of Elbow River Casino, Sam was born in Calgary and has deep roots in the neighborhood. The grocery store that his parents owned and operated stood at 112 - 14th Avenue SE. His business interests have evolved from restaurant proprietor and owner of a jewelry store through owning and managing a construction company to building and operating apartment buildings, shopping centers and hotels, and now, our casino.
Sam has been involved in the delivery of casino gaming since 1977, initially in the Sheraton Calgary Hotel in downtown Calgary. In 1988, Sam opened the first build-to-suit casino facility in Calgary at 1919 Macleod Trail S. Adjoining a small, existing hotel, the Elbow River Inn & Casino flourished and outgrew its original footprint several times until exhausting all of the opportunities to expand on the original site. Having had the foresight to assemble a large tract of adjacent land, an ambitious vision became reality on June 22, 2005, when Sam's Elbow River Casino opened its door in an expansive facility at our current location.
The exterior façade is an elegant brick building that suits the traditional architecture of the neighborhood. Two levels of parking are topped with two levels of entertainment with the feel of Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras. Patrons can vary their experience each visit with exciting dining, entertainment and gaming choices.
