1886 Cafe History
The small wooden building now identified as the 1886 Buffalo Cafe occupies an important niche in the history of Calgary. Now in its 119th year this structure has survived many changes in its immediate surroundings. Beginning in 1886 as the office of the Eau Clair and bow River Lumber company, this space also served as the office of the Calgary water power company starting in 1893. Most of Calgary's pioneers paid their bills for lumber and electrical current at this location in the formative years of our city. Now it is the 1886 Buffalo Cafe First surrounded by large wooden buildings housing impressive lumber milling and electrical generating equipment, the immediate area was ultimately occupied by service barns for city street cars and than buses. To the south the one and two story wooden stores and shops of the 1880's were replaced by impressive sandstone buildings. The downtown Calgary area has now evolved to the skyscraper skyline we observe today. Responsible for the construction of this building and the maze of buildings housing the lumber and water power equipment was pioneer entrepreneur Peter Anthony Prince.
